It’s official. Southside High School’s Khamari Gibbs and Keith High School’s Destiny Hall will be on the cover of the 2014 Gridiron magazine.

Gibbs and Hall won the Times-Journal’s second annual cover vote Friday, garnering a total of 2,331 votes to edge Morgan Academy’s Harrison Frasier and Selma High School’s Ebonna Boyd.

It was clear from the beginning that it was going to be a race between those two matchups.

Frasier and Boyd took an early lead, but by Wednesday Gibbs and Hall had grabbed the lead. Boyd and Frasier got a total of 2,138 votes to finish second.

“We watched it all day,” Hall said. “We kept checking the votes, because us and Ebonaa were so close.”

A total of 7,210 votes were cast this year, which is well beyond last year’s total of 4,219 votes.

“This year’s vote was amazing,” said Times-Journal sports writer Daniel Evans. “We thought this year’s vote would supass last year’s totals, but we never expected this kind of response.”

Selma’s Jesse Boggs and Meadowview Christian’s Heather Day finished third with a total of 748 votes.

Dallas County’s Lowell Furlow and Ellwood Christian’s Gabby Crum finished fourth with 534 votes.

Fifth was Keith’s Deanthony Griffin and Dallas County’s Emily Morgan with 507 votes.

In sixth place was Meadowview Christian’s Wesley Gunter and Southside’s Jayla Woods with 491 votes.

Seventh was Ellwood Christian’s J’miere Solomon and Morgan Academy’s Miranda Johnson, who finished with 461 votes.

“We used a new format this year, matching up a football player from one school with a cheerleader from a different one. It paid off,” Evans said. “The competition was a lot more even across the board this year and a 1A school and 4A school will be on the cover.”

Last year’s cover vote was won by Dallas County’s William Lee. The Hornets had also won Times-Journal Facebook votes for male and female athlete of the year earlier this year.

The 2014 Gridiron magazine will come out in late August, and will preview the football seasons of each of Dallas County’s seven high schools, as well as Concordia College Alabama.
