Daniel Norred Wheeler

Daniel Norred Wheeler died at his home Saturday June 14, 2014. Mr. Wheeler, a retired Air Force Major was born in New Orleans, LA to the late Daniel and Lola N. Wheeler. Major Wheeler, who grew up in Mobile, AL, graduated from high school, The University Military School where he was the top military graduate. He was awarded an academic scholarship to Louisiana State University. A member of Kappa Sigma fraternity he was an Air Force ROTC and distinguished graduate with the rank of Second Lieutenant. Major Wheeler served his country for twenty four years as a Command Fighter Pilot with 73 combat missions in Vietnam, flying F-4’s and F-100’s. He was awarded several military honors including the Bronze Star. On retirement Major Wheeler moved his family to Selma, AL. He served as head of United Way and was in the cattle business with his friend Russell Buster. In 1976 Major Wheeler purchased The Golden Isles Sport Shop in Brunswick, GA.
He is survived by his wife, Star, two sons, Woody, Keehln, wife Maggie, two granddaughters, Lydia and Madelyn Wheeler. His sister, Edith Wheeler Gilchrist is deceased. A niece, Garth G. Gates and two nephews Philip P. Gilchrist and Dr. Daniel Wheeler Gilchrist. Many other family members and a dear family friend, Sandra B. Mitchell. Services for Major Wheeler, a life long Episcopalian, will be held Saturday at 2:00 at Christ Church, Frederica with burial to follow in Christ Church Frederica church yard. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the Hospice of the Golden Isles. Edo Miller and Sons is in charge of arrangements. www.edomillerandsons.com.
