Dallas County Sheriff Harris Huffman earned re-election Tuesday, defeating Lee Green by more than 2,000 votes.
Earning his sixth term as the sheriff, Huffman said he appreciated the support he has received from his family, friends and the Dallas County community.
“I think I’ve been able to show the people that I’m looking out, the best I know how, for the people’s interest,” Huffman said. “I’m ecstatic the way that my election has turned out.”
With 30 of the 31 precincts reported, Huffman received 6,658 votes while Green received 4,476.
Huffman said he plans to initiate projects with minimum cost, such as creating a library at the Dallas County Jail.
Green, who works for the Department of Youth Service, was disappointed by Tuesday’s results and the voter turnout.
“I appreciate the voters who did come out, but some didn’t come out,” Green said. “I’m satisfied on the ones that did come out, because they had a opportunity to make a difference.”
Green said if he had the chance to alter his campaigning methods, he would make sure to encourage even more people to take advantage of the right to vote.
“I would tell them to think back to what their forefathers did for them to cast that vote,” Green said.
