UNIONTOWN — The thought of donating a vital organ to another person might seem scary for many, but Uniontown resident Sherlanie Pitts-Anderson’s love for her husband and faith in God made the decision easy.
When Pitt-Anderson learned in November that her husband Donald Anderson had reached the last stage of kidney failure and would have to be placed on dialysis, she made the decision to donate a kidney without hesitation.
After about 15 years of a relationship and five children, Pitts-Anderson knew it was time to stay true to the wedding vows she made about a year and six months ago to be faithful through sickness and in health.
“I gave my heart to my husband a long time ago, and giving him a kidney, an extension in life, was just another part of who God made me to be,” Pitts-Anderson said.
After Anderson had been evaluated and officially placed on the kidney transplant waiting list, Pitts-Anderson was evaluated in March and learned she had kidney stones and needed to loose five pounds to be considered a candidate.
She then completed tests to determine if her kidney stones were genetic and adopted a healthier lifestyle that helped her lose five pounds in two weeks.
In April, she received a phone call announcing she was an eligible kidney donor for her husband and scheduled her surgery for May 14.
“My husband and I never discussed the possibility of me not being a match because God was in this,” Pitts-Anderson said. “We never attempted to discuss a backup plan because God was in this.”
Pitts-Anderson said her fear did not stop her from donating her kidney for one moment.
“Saying I was scared is like saying I don’t have trust in God,” Pitts-Anderson said. “God created me to be a blessing to my husband during his time of need.”
Anderson and Pitts-Anderson have fully recovered from the surgery.
“I can see and feel that we are getting closer, because of what she did,” Anderson said.
