Staff members at Vaughan Regional Medical Center and residents from UAB Selma Family Medicine are teaming up to support the UAB and United Way’s Doc-In-a Bus program.

Well, sort of.

The two sides will square off in a charity softball game at Bloch Park on June 6 at 6:30 p.m. with all proceeds going to the Doc-In-A-Bus program.  The Doc-in-a-Bus program is a free clinic for uninsured patients that was started in 2008.

While the game’s real purpose is to support the charity, each side is taking it very seriously. There’s been a little bit of smack talk both ways, said UAB second year resident Dr. Sravan Reddy.

“There’s always smack talk going on,” Reddy said. “We take it pretty seriously. There’s no doubt about that. We are all just hoping for a good game.”

UAB Selma Family Medicine won last year’s contest and is hoping to start a winning streak in this fairly new series between the two medical staffs. Reddy said Vaughan Regional Medical Center hasn’t said a lot about practices, but he knows they are secretly preparing.

“We have been practicing for the last two or three weeks at least twice a week,” Reddy said. “The hospital is keeping their practice sessions under wraps. They are not telling anybody about it. They are being secretive.”

Admission for the game is $3. Reddy is encouraging everyone in the community to come support their local doctors and the charity.

“It’s going to be a pretty serious game of softball,” Reddy said. “They will get their money’s worth out of the game — that’s for sure. It’s all for a good cause.”
