The third annual Unity in the Community Praise and Worship with an International Taste will take place Saturday, June 7 at Phoenix Park in Downtown Selma.
Selma City Councilman Samuel Randolph and council president Corey Bowie wanted to host the event in an effort to unify the city of Selma and Dallas County.
“It’s a day of praise and worship where we try to unify Selma together, and also the different choirs, gospel groups and soloists,” Bowie said.
Randolph also said the event should help unify the city of Selma.
“That’s one day we set aside for the community to come together as one,” Randolph said. “No matter what’s going on with you’re life, or whomever you dislike, or what political group you’re with, you just set all those things and come together.”
The event is also a way for the community to give back. There is a $3 admission fee for the event, and additional donations are welcome, as all proceeds from the event are going to the American Red Cross of Central Alabama.
“Red Cross helps people when they’re in need,” Randolph said. “Specifically when their houses catch fire they put them up in hotels.”
The event, which was previously canceled because of inclement weather, will host several different gospel choirs and soloists. The event will also have international foods from several local vendors.
“We try to get an international taste where we have several restaurants and vendors who will set up on that day,” Bowie said. “People can come out and try some of their food.”
There will be a drawing held at the event. Winners of the drawing will have their power bills paid for them.
“I just want everybody to come out and support this great event, because you never know when you might be in need of something,” Randolph said. “It’s an opportunity for the citizens of Selma to come out and give back to other citizens of Selma.”
