The Easter Seals Fun Walk is coming.

Easter Seals West Central Alabama Rehabilitation Center is encouraging the community to join their annual Easter Seals Fun Walk at Memorial Stadium April 11 at 9 a.m. All proceeds from the event fund operational costs for the center, which strives to give all people with disabilities equal opportunities to live, learn, work and play.

“We depend on the community to support us, because we are a nonprofit organization,” Program Coordinator Rachel Ratcliff of Easter Seals West Central Alabama Rehabilitation Center said.

The primary walk will support their preschool program, which benefits children’s with disabilities, such as 4-year-old Miles Knox, who has autism, and 3-year-old Kaylee Goodman, who has cerebral palsy.

Registration for the walk begins at 9 a.m. followed by the walk at 10 a.m. It costs $20 to register a team or individual. Anyone younger than 12-years-old, can register for free.

Those that register will receive a free t-shirt with the Fun Walk logo on it.

The Easter Seals West Central Alabama Rehabilitation Center is hoping to raise $15,000 and attract at least 50 walkers.

Ratcliff said Monday afternoon the organization is quickly approaching their goal with approximately $9,700 of donations given so far.

On Monday afternoon, Ratcliff also reported Selma resident Mary Nell Mayo as the top individual fundraiser with a donation of $6,000.

The top individual fundraiser and top team fundraiser will be announced at the walk.

Kaylee’s mother, Brandy Goodman, said community members should support the walk since she herself sees the benefits the program has helped Kaylee.

Kaylee could not stand and could only sit up if she used her fingertips to balance herself before months of therapy at the center helped her to sit up independently, wave, crawl and more.

“I feel like it’s a good cause, because it will help them out also like it’s helping my child,” Brandy said.

Sponsors for the walk include International Paper Company, Marion Bank and Trust, Cahaba Bank, Pepsi, Alabama PowerSports, Hancock’s Country BBQ, Jack’s and more.

Easter Seals West Central Alabama Rehabilitation Center will also an additional fundraiser at Dave’s Market April 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. where they will be selling hotdogs, polish sausages and sodas.
