Morgan Academy’s boys soccer team found itself in a familiar situation Saturday,  trailing 3-1 to Lee Scott at halftime.

The Senators rallied past the Warriors to win 5-3, scoring the last four goals of the game. Tuesday night, Morgan had rallied back from a similar 3-1 deficit against Fort Dale in a win.

“I challenged them at halftime to dig deep,” Morgan boys soccer coach Jay Minter said. “We were down 3-1 on the road Tuesday night and we dug deep and we came back again. The one advantage we seem to have on most other teams is speed on our attack and we were able to utilize that speed and find some gaps and take advantage of a young goalie.”

Morgan’s Samir Frelj scored twice, including the goal that gave the Senators a 4-3 lead in the second half. Stanhope Frazier scored the final goal, which put the finishing touches on Morgan’s comeback win. Harrison Watters also scored for the Senators.

“I told them, they were so dead at halftime just to dig deep and find that extra bit in the gas tank, to find that water to draw from the well and they found it,” Minter said. “They’ve done it twice. If they get in that situation again, they are going to know it is there inside of them.”

The Senators boys play Monday at Lyman-Ward.

 

Morgan 4, Lee Scott 1 (Girls)

Lauren Rutherford scored three goals Saturday to lead Morgan Academy’s Lady Senators past Lee Scott 4-1.

Rutherford scored in both halves and Kara Wall added an additional score as the Senators played their fifth game nine days.

“It has been a problem trying to figure out formations because of lack of skill or inabilities but the girls are starting to play a lot better,” Morgan girls coach Stephen Rutherford said after the game. “I think the formation that we used today is the one we are going to stick with the rest of the season.”

Rutherford was also happy with his team’s ability to keep possession of the ball throughout the game, which made it hard for the Lady Warriors to mount a rally.

The Senators led at the half 2-1 and used goals by Rutherford and Wall to add to their advantage in the second half.

At one point in the second half an injury to the Lee Scott goalie forced the Warriors to have to play shorthanded, because the team did not have any more substitutions.

Morgan’s girls host Hooper in their next contest on March 18.
