A Selma native is presenting a grand celebration meant to unify the community.

Selma resident Michael Dillard is hosting the 14th annual Black Belt Family Reunion Thursday, Feb. 9, at Old National Guard Armory with doors opening at 3 p.m. and the program starting at 4 p.m. Dillard said he created the reunion with the intent to bring people of all ages, races and denominations together to fellowship.

“What I see in the churches’ denominations is a whole lot of division,” Dillard said. “I decided if we could bring an event that would cater to all the denominations, it would be something good for the Black Belt.”

Barbeque, gospel music and worship service will be provided at the service. Lee Williams and the Spiritual QC’s from Tupelo, Miss., the Anointed Brown Sister from Tuscaloosa, Pastor Walter Elis and the Country Boys from Montgomery and more will be performing at the reunion. For the first time, Pastor Tim Rodgers and the Fellas are scheduled to perform.

“We’re excited, because we are bringing Stellar award members to the Selma area,” Dillard said. “We mingle, talk and eat right before the service. We just have a real church service at the Old National Guard Armory.”

Dillard said the event is very popular among the community, often earning several positive responses from those who have experienced it. He said that last year’s event attracted a crowd of more than 2,200 people.

Tyrone Barnes, who helps hire musical talent, said people anticipate the event every year.

“Everyone is excited,” Barnes said. “They look forward to it every year.”

General admission tickets are $25 each. VIP tickets, which give ticket buyers a seat closer to the stage, are $37. All tickets, which are selling quickly, must be paid in advance.
