An inmate at the Dallas County jail is dead after hanging himself Thursday afternoon.

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department declined to disclose any information about the incident, saying the matter has been turned over to the Alabama Bureau of Investigation.

Calls made to the ABI office in Montgomery were not returned.

The Times-Journal confirmed the inmate was 45-year-old Selma resident Jerusalem Festes Grimes. Grimes was in the Dallas County Jail after being arrested Jan. 10 for driving while intoxicated and violating probation.

Grimes’ probation stems from a 2010 incident in Shelby County when, according to media reports from The Shelby County Reporter, he allegedly barricaded himself in a Vandiver home, located in East Shelby County. At the time, he was charged with terrorist threats and criminal mischief.

When Shelby County sheriff’s deputies responded to the incident, they spotted Grimes with a weapon outside the home. Grimes then re-entered the home and law enforcement set up a perimeter.

After law enforcement began talking to Grimes, he surrendered without incident.
