Residents will have the opportunity to make Selma cleaner, while getting rid of a lot of unwanted trash this weekend.

As declared by Selma Mayor George Evans, Saturday is the first Citywide Trash Pick-Up Day of the year. Evans is urging all residents to help make Selma a cleaner city by placing their trash at curbside for pickup.

“It’s just a message in terms of the young people and old people that see us doing things that will hopefully send a message to them that we don’t need trash. We don’t need to litter in our city,” Evans said. “Hopefully, this will create a certain awareness on the behalf of citizens that there is a time to clean up.“

From 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, five shuttles trucks will be spend one to one and half hours on route throughout the Selma area. They will visit Wards 1 and 2 from 8- 9:30 a.m.; Wards 2, 3 and 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.; Wards 4,5, 6 and 8 from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.; and Wards 4,5 and 6 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

One truck will pick up on main thoroughfares.

“People have gathered a lot of trash after the Christmas holidays — boxes and things like that,” Evans said.

The disposal service will accept household and street trash, yard debris and brush, furniture and mattresses for pickup.

The city’s disposal service asks residents to not put items for pickup in front of mailboxes or have vehicles blocking the trash. Appliances, electronics, garbage, hazardous waste, pesticides, tires and loose leaves will not be accepted.

The city does remind residents that leaves must be bagged.

Evans said there would be two more Citywide Trash Pick-Up Days later in the year. He said one will be either in March or April and another will be in either August or September.

“Those are the timelines in order to give the people an opportunity to get some things done around their houses and their yards,” Evans said.
