Initial results from an autopsy have ruled out foul play in the death of a Selma man whose body was found after he went missing nearly a week ago.

Lt. Curtis Muhannad with the Selma Police Department said the exact cause of death for Arthur Lee McWilliams has not been determined, but Friday’s autopsy revealed no reason to suspect foul play.

Muhannad said a medical condition McWilliams had might have played a role in his death.

“Mr. McWilliams had a condition that caused him to suffer from chronic seizures,” Muhannad said. “And his family has told us that when he left the house on Sunday he did not have his bag of medicines with him.”

Family members became concerned Sunday evening when McWilliams did not return after leaving the house at 10 a.m. that day.

He was known to walk the streets of Selma picking up aluminum cans, which he would take to be recycled.

Burnette Brown, McWilliams’ daughter, said he would normally tell the family where he would be looking for cans.

“He would normally be in and out all day when he was walking around to pick up cans, and he would always tell us where he was going,” Brown said. “But on Sunday, he just picked up and walked out.”

Muhannad said McWilliams was found near a trash pile behind a home on Johnson Street, a spot where he had been known to look for cans in the past.

“Mr. McWilliams was found near the trash area behind the residence on Johnson Street,” Muhannad said. ”According to the resident, it wasn’t unusual to see him walking around the house and the trash area looking for aluminum cans.”
