The Alzheimer’s Outreach Group and Collegiate Minting are giving the community a chance to support a good cause.

Collegiate Minting is giving Alabama and Auburn key chains to anyone willing to give donations to Alzheimer’s Outreach Group, which is a resource and support system for people directly and indirectly affected by Alzheimer’s. The outreach group will use the money to fund transmitters for Project Lifesaver Program, which is an organization dedicated to searching for demented individuals and is in the process of being available in every Alabama County.

“We’re going to do what it takes to get a transmitter in the hands of everybody that needs it in the state of Alabama, and we’re starting right here in Dallas County,” Wayne Calloway, the directory of Alzheimer’s Outreach Group, said.

The transmitters, which can be secured on the ankles or wrists, allow trained emergency team to locate lost individuals by use of a radio frequency. The team is able to find wanders in about 15 to 30 minutes of searching, which is conducting on ground and by helicopter.

The Project Lifesaver Program has conducted more than 1,500 searches at a 100 percent success rate.

Calloway said that he is hoping the bronze key chains, which can be found at any Regions Bank in the area, will attract enough donations to absorb the cost of each $300 transmitter bracelets.

He said that all qualified individuals in Dallas County, which is one of the 48 Alabama counties with a Project Lifesaver Program, need to be enrolled in the program.

“It’s just having a blessing to know that if they wander off, all you have to do is call,” Calloway said.
