Emily Hays

Genuinely kind, others-centered, endearing, accepting, optimistic, and just the right amount of spunk mark just a few of the characteristics that will define the legacy of Emily Hays, a true servant at heart who walked all of her days with dignity. Loved by all who met her, it was the love she had for her Lord, her family, and her friends that she poured out daily. Three days following her 92nd birthday, Emily passed away on December 17, 2013. Emily is survived by her children, James Vanis Corr, Jr. (Donna), William Voltz Corr (Susan), Emily Corr Lee (Mark), and Julia Corr Gordy (Randy); by her step-daughter Katherine Hays Stewart; by her ten grandchildren; and by her six great-grandchildren. She joins in Heaven her husband, Robert Bartholow Hays and her beloved parents, James and Emily Voltz. A native of Selma, where she was crowned at sixteen (the singular and reigning) “Queen of the Edmund Pettus Bridge,” Emily resided in Birmingham for sixty-five years. The joy she brought to all of those who loved her will continue in her cherished memory. The memorial service will be held on Friday, December 20 at 10 am at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Birmingham (visitation at 9 am) and a graveside service at New Live Oak Cemetery in Selma. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Cahaba Park Church building fund at 4256 Cahaba Heights Court, Birmingham, Alabama 35243.
