One week after watching a classmate sign a letter of intent to continue their athletics career into college, Dallas County High School’s Amy Persinger officially signed with Auburn University Montgomery Friday afternoon.

Persinger, who plays centerfield, said she is very excited about the opportunity to continue her career with the Warhawks.

“It feels amazing to know that I have been working towards this since I’ve been playing and just the fact that my work is starting to pay off,” Persinger said.

One of the things that made AUM such an enticing choice was that Persinger would get the chance to play with former teammate Cassie Daniels again, who graduated from DCHS in 2011.

“I’m really excited,” Persinger said. “Ever since I heard Cassie talking about it, it was one of my dreams to go play with her again and I saw their program and I really liked it.”

AUM softball coach Chris Wilcoxson, entering her sixth year on the job, is very excited that her program was able to sign Persinger.

“We are really excited about getting Amy,” Wilcoxson said. “We are in phase right now where we are graduating outfielders and she is just a young humble kid who works hard and has really a lot of potential to be a great athlete.”

Wilcoxson said one of the best things about Persinger is that she is a power hitter, which has been hard to find since she took over as head coach., but she also feels like her new recruit can take command in the outfield.

“She’s fearless,” Wilcoxson said. “We need somebody that is ready to take control and charge in the outfield and we felt like she did a great job in competitive environments with travel ball and with the all star game this summer.”

Persinger’s current head coach, Willie Moore, said her work ethic will drive her to succeed at the collegiate level.

“She’s one of those players that is really solid in all areas and she is always looking to improve and enhance her skills,” Moore said. “That’s what is going to make her a great player at the next level.”

Persinger played in the Alabama High School Athletics Association all-star game July 16, showing off her skills by robbing a homerun and singling to score a run.
