The skies over Craig Field will once again come to life on Saturday during Wallace Community College-Selma’s Aviation Day.
The free event will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Craig Field Airport and include an estimated 15 planes flying in and computer simulated activities for local students and the general public.
The fly-in is coordinated by The Black Pilots of America.
Aviation related industries will also be present with information display booths, according to a news release from Wallace. The release said attendees would have the opportunity to experience a pre-flight check, learn how an airplane flies, learn about aviation careers and how an airport works.
The event wasn’t scheduled on a whim. Instead, WCCS President Dr. James Mitchell said Aviation Day is designed to coincide with the college’s exploration in aviation related programs.
“When I was growing up I always wanted to be a pilot, but I never met one so I guess that ended my career,” Mitchell said. “We are trying to recruit aviation related industries. This is our way of promoting aviation.”
