he next grand jury to convene in Dallas County will undoubtedly hear a lot of cases, but there is one that will without question be one of the easiest to reach a decision.

Last weekend, a Selmont couple was returning home from work. We can only imagine all they wanted was to get settled, get ready for bed and go to sleep.

Unfortunately, they came face-to-face with two burglars who broke into their home earlier.

One of the burglars became engaged in a scuffle with the husband, who sustained injuries to his head and hand. In the midst of all of this, the husband was able to retrieve the gun he was carrying and then shot, and killed the burglar.

The other burglar then left the scene and has yet to be seen or captured by authorities.

This is a horrifically sad story on many levels, mainly in that the sanctity of this couple’s home was violated and that a man’s life was lost.

The shooting is a case that must go before the grand jury by law, but authorities have said that all indications and all the evidence points to the shooting being justified.

We hope that is the case.

In the past week, this shooting was just of two that received attention, the other involving a senseless shooting at the Dollar General, where an employee was injured after someone fired shots into the building from outside.

The shooter has not been identified or captured.

And, all of this is on top of the recent problems of vandalism in the Pine Glenn community.

Someone needs to step up and say enough is enough. The increase in crime — potentially deadly crime — is troubling and must be addressed.

We are so thankful the couple who found the burglars in their home are safe today, but it is a shame they feel they are risking their lives entering their own home. That’s sad.

Who will it be? Who will be the person, or persons, who will step up, rally the community against a criminal element that has found a home in Selmont. It’s time this proud community take a stand and fight back.
