SELMONT — Two burglars greeted a Selmont couple returning home from work early Saturday morning. In the exchange that ensued, one of the burglars was shot and killed, while the other one escaped and is considered armed and dangerous.

Sgt. Mike Grantham, with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department, said the couple returned to their Lowery Drive home around 2:30 a.m. Due to the fact they have been the victims of burglaries before, the husband entered the home first.

Grantham said when the wife came into the house, she noticed glass from a glass door on the ground. It was then, Grantham said, the two burglars came from the back of the house, one of them attacking the husband.

“In the exchange, the husband was hit in the head and received a cut on the hand. He then was able to retrieve a pistol he was carrying and shot one of the burglars,” Grantham said. “The other suspect fled the scene.”

He said the burglar who was shot was pronounced dead at the scene by responding authorities.

Grantham said Tuesday they were not releasing the name of the burglar fatally wounded due to the fact some family members had not been notified. As for the other suspect, he said authorities have information they hope will lead to a quick arrest.

As for the husband, Grantham said the pistol was confiscated and the shooting would be presented to the next Grand Jury, “as is the case with every shooting.”

“At this point, everything that we have found, everything the investigation has turned up, tells us this was a justified shooting,” Grantham said. “But, we still need to send it to the Grand Jury.”
