A large crowd gathered in the Dallas County Courthouse’s commission chambers Monday to receive free legal advice as a part of Alabama State Bar’s Pro Bono Clinic.

The Alabama State Bar hosted a legal clinic Monday that allowed low-income people residents in Greene, Hale, Marengo, Perry, Wilcox, Dallas, Sumter, Montgomery, Lowndes and Bibb counties to receive legal service they normally could not afford.

As a part of the State Bar’s Volunteer Lawyers Program, a group of attorney’s from 10 different counties, and law students from Jones School of Law, provided information for each individual that attended. Attendees received advice on a wide range of civil issues, including adoption, bankruptcy and divorce. The group did discuss criminal cases.

Ruth Stott attended the clinic and appreciated the effort put forth by program organizers and participants and the information shared.

“I think it’s wonderful,” Stott said. “People need this type of program.”

The Jones School of Law students arrived on the Justice Bus, which is Alabama State Bar’s pro bono services vehicle used to make stops throughout Alabama communities during Pro Bono Week.

The clinic marked the first event to kick off Pro Bono Week.

Gov. Robert Bentley honored the week with a proclamation honoring pro bono services provided throughout the state.

Local attorney and Fourth Judicial Circuit Bar Commissioner Jana Russell Garner said the attorneys and students were generous to give their time and advice.

“They really have a heart for the community and helping people,” Garner said. “They are willing to be here and serve.”

Dallas County Probate Judge Kimbrough Ballard said the lawyers presented quality advice.

“I can’t say enough good things about our lawyers,” Ballard said. “I know they are going to leave a good taste in their mouth.”
