A local group, determined to draw attention to local artists and performers, is inviting the public to attend a December show featuring an abundance of local talent.

Members of the Blackbelt Benefit Group have started promoting Art Jam, which will take place Dec. 27 at the Selma Walton Theater.

The event will feature live music, as well as an art show displaying works created by a number of local artists.

Carl Bowline, a BBG member, said events like Art Jam are one way the group hopes to highlight local talent.

“The group was created to draw attention to the Black Belt and draw tourism dollars to the area,” Bowline said.

Money raised during the event will be donated to other local non-profit groups that are working to improve the community.

“We are a non-profit group and so we are trying to use some different approaches to solve newer problems and do some things that resonate with folks both in and out of the community to draw attention to the things going on here,” Bowline said.

Clay Carmichael, also a member of BBG, said attracting young people to events is also important.

“This is just one thing we are trying to do,” Carmichael said. “We want to do a lot of events to attract younger people to Selma.”

Live music will be performed by Jason Isbell and his wife, Amanda Shires. The couple currently live near Muscle Shoals.

Carmichael said people who buy VIP passes can get in and view the art show at 5 p.m., while those with general admission passes will be able to get in at 6 p.m., with the main music performance scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

General admission in $25.75 and VIP passes are $61.80. A limit of 50 VIP passes will be sold for the event.
