The clock is ticking down to the launch of another year of the educational talent search at Wallace Community College Selma, and those in charge of recruiting parents and students are finalizing preparations for the program’s Parents Night, scheduled to take place Tuesday.
Corey Bowie, talent search recruiter and adult education advisor at WCCS, said members of his office have been working to spread the word about the program to anyone who could potentially benefit from the program.
“We’re trying to saturate the community with our flyers and just spread the word,” Bowie. “The whole meaning behind Tuesday’s Parents Night is to familiarize parents with the program and try to recruit some more students.”
The federally funded program — which can serve up to 829 students from Dallas and Perry counties — offers educational services to students in grades 6 through 12.
Bowie said he has a personal platitude for the program — three goals the program is based upon.
“I want kids to stay in high school, graduate high school, and get a chance to enroll at a college or university,” Bowie said.
Bowie said students participating in the program can receive tutoring, learn how to obtain financial aid and scholarships, attend career and motivational workshops and speak directly with guidance counselors who will visit their schools.
Bowie said Tuesday’s event will be a chance for potential WCCS students, and their parents, to learn about the program at a greater depth.
“We want to disseminate all this information about this program,” Bowie said.
Tuesday’s event takes place at 6 p.m. in the Hank Sanders Technology Center on the WCCS campus. Anyone with additional questions is invited to contact Corey Bowie at 876-9290.
