A man wanted for raping an eight-year-old girl in Selma was taken into custody after being located in Jacksonville, Fla. Wednesday.
The Selma Police Department said they received a hit from the Jacksonville Florida Sheriff’s Department, who notified the Dallas County e-911 that the Federal Marshall Services had detained Karl Brian Mason, 41, who was wanted for rape first degree of a child under the age of 12.
Mason was wanted for questioning in the case in late June, but days later on July 1, the Selma Police Department declared Mason, who was believed to be on the run, a wanted suspect charged with first-degree rape. This decision, Sgt. Kendall Thomas with the SPD said, came after preliminary medical reports and examinations, testimony from the child’s mother as well as other evidence the department and the district attorney’s office collected.
Mason was arrested Wednesday after he was, extradited back to Selma by SPD detectives.
Mason is accused of raping an eight-year-old girl who is believed to be the daughter of his live-in girlfriend of the last four to five years. The couple has one-year-old child together.
Thomas said Mason does have a criminal background, but has never been accused of a crime of a sexual nature.
The alleged incident occurred June 25 on the 1200 block of 5th Avenue.
He is currently being held in the Dallas County Jail with a $250,000 bond.
Mason could face at least 20 years in prison and additional fines.
