The city of Selma and the Downtown Selma Association have partnered to provide local children with a way to beat the heat this summer.

The Larry Striplin Performing Arts Center will play children’s movies each Wednesday during the summer for local children looking for both entertainment and a snack.

Perry Davis, the performing arts center’s events coordinator, said the movies are a way to keep children occupied for one afternoon each week.

“We do it every year for a dollar. The kids can come in and get popcorn, a drink, and a movie,” Perry said. “It helps kids do something constructive and helps them stay out of the streets one day a week.”

The Performing Arts Center has been playing summertime children’s movies for years.

“We have been teaming up with Selma’s mayor for about the last six years,” Perry said. “This year we will be playing movies up until the week before school starts.”

The June movie schedule includes “Akeelah and the Bee,” “Shrek,” “Bridge to Terabithia,” and “Toy Story 2.”

Doors open at 1:30 p.m., and the movies begin at 2 p.m.

The weekly movie schedule will be posted in The Selma Times-Journal’s community calendar throughout the summer.
