Beginning Friday, residents will have the opportunity to rummage through new and used items as the state hosts its second annual World’s Widest Yard Sale.

The yard sale, which stretches along U.S. Highway 80 from Phenix City to Demopolis, will be held Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Queen of Peace Women’s Society has been working for the past several months to prepare for the yard sale, as it is their first year participating. Items will be for sale at the former Queen of Peace School, located at 2511 Summerfield Road.

“We decided to participate this year because we are trying to raise money to renovate St. Andrew’s Hall, one of our buildings downtown,” explained Ann Jung, society member.

Along with two rooms overflowing with items, the school will also have vendors lined up outside on the lawn. A large array of items will be for sale, Jung said, including T-shirts, shoes, dishware, seasonal decorations, picture frames and much more.

The yard sale, which will cover more than 350 miles, is projected to bring in hundreds of visitors from around the state and region.

“People donated a large assortment of items, and most of it is new,” Jung said as she walked by the several fold up tables in the school. “Someone donated a crystal chess set that’s never been used — we’re only asking $10 for it.”

Jung said she, along with other society members, are hoping the yard sale will yield high revenue as they are looking to do several upgrades to St. Andrew’s Hall, which is located on the corner of Dallas Avenue and Washington Street in the historic downtown area.

“The building is very historic, so it’s important that it’s kept up,” Jung explained. “We’ve already done a few repairs to the building, like replacing the flooring and putting in new curtains, but we would like to do more.”

Over the years, the building has been used for several purposes, such as a school and a hospital. Jung said items not sold at the yard sale will either be donated to Good Will or kept for the society’s annual Christmas bazaar.

The Selma Flea Market announced Tuesday, they would be offering free table space on Friday only as part of the Widest Yard Sale.
