The deadline for the city of Selma’s Summer Youth Employment Program is Monday at 4:30 p.m. Applications may be obtained at the Selma City Hall personnel office and the Selma Career Center.

The program, which is an annual program for the city of Selma, accepts applications for Selma youth between the ages of 15 and 22. Last summer, the program placed more than 220 youth in businesses and organizations around the city.

“It provides youth with meaningful work during the summer months and teaches them some entry level skills,” said Val Jones, personnel director for the program, in a recent interview with the Times-Journal. “It also teaches them time management and reporting to supervision.”

The program is broken in to two four-week sessions, the first beginning June 10 and the second July 9. Youth who participate will log in 16 hours per week, making $7.25 per hour.

“They’ll be working Mondays through Thursdays only,” Jones said, adding that youth must show proof of Selma residence to participate.

Jobs available through the program include landscape, office jobs and working with area organizations, departments and agencies.

The lottery drawing will be held on Wednesday, May 15th, at the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center, 211 Washington Street, at 5 p.m.

Youth must be present at the lottery drawing when their name is called in order to be eligible to participate.

Participants will work 16 hours per week, Monday through Thursday only. They must commit to working the full four weeks.

Donations for the Summer Youth Employment Program are still being accepted from businesses, organizations and individuals. It costs $500 to sponsor one child.
