Area rescue teams should practice more safety drills

Driving down Church Street and turning on to Water Avenue Thursday morning, many residents slowed their cars as there were several fire department members propelling down the steep embankment. Thankfully, the department was simply conducting a drill and no one was in actual danger.

We commend the fire department for taking the initiative to carry out these exercises throughout the week. Not only did the department practice the exercise from Water Avenue, but also several other locations along the Alabama River. Through conducting these rope-rescue drills, members were able to prepare themselves for the worst and get a feel for what would be required in these situations.

To ensure safety in Selma, we encourage other area safety organizations to practice similar drills so when the time comes to rescue someone from danger, everyone will know what to do. In dire times, you can never be too prepared.
