Fall Little Lambs consignment sale just two weeks away

A good deal and a great cause join forces at the Little Lambs children’s fall consignment sale.

The fall sale will take place at the Old National Guard Armory on Friday, Sept. 14 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 15 from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

The Little Lambs consignment sale works by having sellers pre-register and price their own items, which are then sold, returning 75 percent of the proceeds to the seller and giving 25 percent to charity.

This sale began in 1998 and has continued twice a year for the past 14 years, raising more than $77,000 for charity, Katrina Smith, Little Lambs co-chair said.

The Little Lambs council decides which charities to donate to a week after the sale, once all of the sellers have been paid.

In the past they have donated to Sav-A-Life, The Selma-Dallas Public Library, the Ronald McDonald House in Birmingham, Teen Challenge, Selma Area Food Bank, and the Selma Easter Seals, among others.

When sellers pre-register they will receive a brochure detailing all the rules for the sale, Eleanor Nichols, Little Lambs council member said.

Items to be sold can include children’s clothes, baby beds, playpens, school uniforms, junior sizes, coats, jackets, books, maternity clothes, purses, women’s shoes, and more.

“They must tag and price all their items,” Nichols said.

The tagged and priced clothes will be accepted at the Armory on Wednesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Thursday form 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

It cost $5 to become a seller, and the council asks that each seller work a 3-hour shift during one of the four days the event is taking place.

Thursday night after all the clothing racks are set up and filled with clothes and the tables are arranged and organized with children’s toys, all of the sellers are invited to a preview sale.

“It’s one of the great advantages of being a seller; you get first choice,” Nichols said.

This year the Little Lambs’ council has decided to try something different. Instead of inviting only the sellers to the preview sale, they are opening the sale up to the public. For a $5 entry fee, anyone is welcome to come to the sale on Thursday night at 7:15 p.m.

The entry fee will go into a separate fund for the Angel Tree Christmas ministry.

Smith said that several people get there early because there is usually a long line to get in, adding that last year, “we had sellers there before 5:15 p.m.”

To become a seller contact Misty Wilkinson at 877-1993 to register.
