On Thursday July 26 at the Old Cahawba Archeological Park, children from the community will blaze down a new bike trail on brand new donated bikes.

The Old Cahawba bike trail ribbon cutting will open the new trail to the public for walking and bikes.

This project, initiated by several organizations such as the Strategic Health Alliance, is intended to give those that travel on the trail a richer knowledge of Old Cahawba history as well as pride in heritage for locals.

The ribbon cutting will feature addresses by individuals who know and love all that Old Cahawba has to offer, and will be open to the public. Strategic Health Alliance, Alabama Historical Commission and Regions Bank all came together and donated to the bike trail. This all contributed to the grand opening possible, according to Andrew Odom, an intern with Living Democracy who saw the project through to the finish. The new bikes and bike racks will be officially presented to Old Cahawba, and following the addresses, there will be an inaugural bike ride through the ribbon that will feature everyone who is able and wants to be a part of it. Odom said that he hopes that this event will inspire memories in the young and old that will not be forgotten.

“The benefits of having a public bike trail are great indeed. It will provide opportunities for exercise, social interaction, and historical education,” Odom said. “The added benefit of this trail is the free public-use bikes that have been donated by our generous sponsors.”
