With the district tournaments in the books, the city all-star baseball teams, as well as the city itself, are looking forward to state-tournament play.
Four Selma All-Star baseball teams are preparing for state tournaments, with two beginning play on Thursday, and two beginning play on July 20.
After defeating Butler in the district tournament at Bloch Park on Friday and Saturday, Selma’s 15-16-17-year-old Dixie Pre-Majors team will travel to Ozark on Thursday to play Sand Mountain at 6 p.m., while Selma’s 18-19-year-old Dixie Majors team will be the host of the state tournament at Bloch Park starting Thursday and ending Monday, July 16.
Selma Parks and Recreation director Elton Reece said the city is also sending two other baseball teams to state tournaments this month.
“What we have left now, we have the 14-year-old Dixie Boys team — they’re going to Piedmont on July 20 for the state tournament,” Reece said. “Our 13 year olds are going to Opelika for the state tournament on July 20.”
The state tournaments are a nine team, double-elimination format.
The Selma Dixie Majors state tournament starting at Bloch Park on Thursday will feature four games Thursday, four games Friday, five games Saturday, two games Sunday, and wrap up with two games on Monday.
Hobson City will play Opp on Thursday at 1 p.m. to start the Dixie Majors tournament at Bloch Park, followed by Southeastern Montgomery against Tuscaloosa at 3:30 p.m., Gadsden versus Haleyville at 6 p.m., and finishing the day will be host-team Selma versus Central Florence at 8:30 p.m.
Bellingrath, who earned a day-one bye, will start play on Friday at 10 a.m. against the winner of Tuscaloosa and Southeastern Montgomery.
Reece said all the teams for the Dixie Majors tournament are booked and play is ready to begin, and he’s hoping Selma’s teams can continue their hot streak.
“It’s going well. All of them have reservations, and the motels are full. Administratively, we just have a coaches meeting on that morning at ten o’ clock then the tournament actually starts at one o’ clock that afternoon,” Reece said. “Our teams played well, they really played well. They hit the ball pretty good, I just hope everything they did this weekend carries over to the state tournaments this week.”
