Many in town claim to have the very best barbecue but one organization not only calls their barbecue the best, but claims it to be for the very best cause— helping others.
The Selma Emblem Club will have their annual barbecue fundraiser on Saturday, June 30.
The event usually happens around the July 4th holiday to help celebrate patriotism and raise money for the club’s yearly efforts like their volunteer trips to nursing homes as well as raising money for college scholarships.
“This is our biggest fundraiser of the year,“ Said Selma Emblem Club President Madelyn Bowles. “We hope to get a lot of people to buy tickets for the barbecue and Don Rose makes a very good special sauce every year.”
Last year, the club raised close to $6,000, but this year they hope to meet their goal of $10,000. The money raised funds the local chapter’s charitable activities, as well as fund scholarships at the state and national level. At least two to three local high school seniors receive scholarships from the Emblem Club every year.
“Well our barbecue is some of the best that’s served here in the county and we’ve always been told that,” Bowles said of the club’s barbecue.
The event will be held at the Elk’s Lodge on Highway 80 West and take-out plates will be ready for pickup. Barbecue will be sold by the plate and by the pound and both cost $8. In addition to some pulled pork, patrons can purchase chips, pickles, coleslaw, bread and sweet tea.
The Emblem Club is a membership of women formed to associate themselves to respect and honor the American flag, patriotism, fellowship and to involve themselves in community service. The Emblem Club is recognized as an auxiliary of an Elks Lodge.
