Tuesday marked the end for girls participating in the 51st Annual Bud Burns Dixie Junior Invitational at the Selma Country Club, but for the boys it was only the beginning.
Girls participants finished up the second round on Tuesday as champions were crowned, while the boys teed off for the first of two days of competition.
Tommy Burns, PGA golf professional with the Selma Country Club, said the girls competition wrapped up with 17-year-old Heather Gillenwaters of Madison winning the overall tournament, while the boys groups began Tuesday and will continue Wednesday morning.
“Round 2 of the girls was held today and the winner of the tournament was Heather Gillenwaters — she shot 79, 82 for a total of 161. It’s not the record, but that’s still pretty good for the girls,” Burns said. “98 boys will tee off today. The 10-and-under played 9 holes, and all the other age groups will play 18 holes today. The players in the 15-16-17-18 who make A Division will have to play 36 holes tomorrow morning (Wednesday) starting about 7:30 a.m. The 11-12-13-14 will only have to play 18 holes tomorrow along with the 15-16-17-18 boys who make B Division.”
Gillenwaters, who also finished in first place for the 16-17-18 age group, said she was surprised to be able to win in her first time playing in the Selma tournament.
“It’s really surreal, and I didn’t expect to win. It’s my first year playing out here,” Gillenwaters said. “I just came out here, played my game and ended up shooting a 79. Today kind of wasn’t my best, but I pulled through in the end.”
Burns said, overall, the second day of the tournament was going really well, especially in terms of weather.
“I think today has been a great success,” Burns said. “The weather has been fabulous considering the past history where it was so hot you couldn’t stand it. The golf course is fabulous, it’s holding up great under play, and I think everything is going very well.”
Other top finishers in the girls division included Mychael O’Berry of Hoover, who finished in first place for the 10-11-12 age group with a total score of 168, shooting 24-over-par for the tournament.
In the girls 13-14-15 division, Sarah Grace Drop finished in first place with a total score of 167, shooting 23-over par, while Madison Sanders of Clanton finished in second place with 170, shooting 26-over-par, and Ashton Maddaloni of Eclectic finished in third place with a total of 171, shooting 27-over-par.
In the girls 16-17-18 division, Gillenwaters finished in first place with a total of 161, shooting 17-over-par, while Tori Smith of Killen finished in second place with a total of 166, shooting 22-over-par, and Jillian Stewart of Selma finished in third place with a total of 177, shooting 33-over-par.
