Alabama State Troopers suspect alcohol was a factor in Sunday’s single-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 80 that caused severe damage to the Selma welcoming sign.

The driver of the vehicle, a 1990 Buick Skylark, was identified as Antony Jerome Reese, a 39-year-old resident of Selma.

Reese was traveling westbound at 12:15 a.m. when he lost control of the Skylark that he was driving, veered off the roadway and struck the sign, according to a press release from state troopers.

Reese was injured in the crash, and was transported to Vaughan Regional Medical Center by ambulance, the release said.

Troopers are continuing to investigate the accident.
