Next Sunday may be Majs. Tonya and Eric Roberts’ last day in Selma, but the couple, who direct the local Salvation Army, are hoping to send 10 children who participate in their character-building program to summer camp before they leave.
To help raise the $2,000 needed to send the children to summer camp, the Salvation Army will host a yard sale on Saturday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 524 Broad St.
The organization has collected various pieces of furniture, including tables and chairs and a china cabinet, as well as videos, clothes, a refrigerator and other items, Tonya Roberts said. All of the items were donated to the yard sale from their church and community members.
“In the last four years that we’ve been stationed here, we’ve worked with these kids every Tuesday night in our character building program,” she said. “Most of these kids come from single-parent homes and this is just a way that we can reach out to them and give them the opportunity to go away and meet other kids and learn new things that will help them in the future.”
Roberts said the whole goal for the yard sale is to raise awareness of the need to raise funds to get the 10 children to camp, located in Lexington, Miss., and that she was hopeful the $2,000 goal would be met.
“This fundraiser is important because we want to send these kids to camp,” she said. “This is a great opportunity for them to go to the camp, where they get to do crafts, learn about nature, make new friends, and it’s a great atmosphere for the kids to get away and to enjoy themselves. They have Bible classes and they’ll have a good time together.”
Roberts said she was grateful for the support the Selma community showed the Salvation Army during her four years there, and she urged residents to continue that support in the days ahead.
