For some, a hole-in-one is a-once-in-a-lifetime shot, but Saturday saw the rare shot occur twice in one day.

Local golfers Matthew Leashore and George Hicks both hit holes-in-one at Valley Grande Golf Course on Saturday, May 26.

Hicks, who hit the shot at the fourth hole, said he felt exactly as one would imagine someone would feel after hitting a hole-in-one — thrilled.

“I hit a 6-iron, the ball bounced one time and it went in the hole,” Hicks said. “Obviously, I was elated, as anyone would be with a hole-in-one. I’ve been playing golf a long time and that’s just my second hole-in-one I’ve had. A lot of guys have been playing a lifetime and have never had one.”

For Leashore, who hit his shot on the 11th hole, it was the third hole-in-one he’s ever hit, and it’s a feeling he said can’t really be explained.

“I was hitting a 5-iron, and I hit it, and from the time it left the tee it was headed straight for the hole,” Leashore said. “Matter of fact, that’s the same hole I had my second hole-in-one on. It’s a feeling that’s hard to explain because some people have been playing 40 or 50 years and never had one. It’s a feeling where you have to do it to know how it feels.”

It’s also another hole-in-one for Leashore after he had to retool his game due to an accident nearly eight years ago.

Leashore’s left hand was partially amputated, and was later reattached, after it got caught in an auger.

He said he got some solid advice that has helped him continue to play the game he loves.

“An old man always told me while I was healing, he said ‘always keep a club in your right hand.’ He said ‘wherever you go, just use that right hand,’” Leashore said. “Virtually, the right hand takes over, and the left hand is just on it [the club].”
