Local roads quiet over long holiday

State troopers investigated three fatal crashes with a total of three fatalities this Memorial Day weekend, a reduction compared to the seven traffic-related fatalities that occurred last year, said Trooper John Reese.
The three crashes occurred in Walker, Madison and Winston counties. Preliminary investigations indicate that seat belts were available but not in use in two of the three crashes, Reese said in a prepared statement Tuesday. The third fatal crash involved a motorcyclist who was killed, he said.
“Despite heavier than usual traffic for holiday travel, troopers were not called to investigate any fatal crashes Sunday or Monday,” Reese said.
Locally, Dallas County Chief Deputy Randy Pugh, who said the Sheriff’s Department was still in the process of compiling statistics from the weekend, said the number of calls received by the department was less than previous Memorial Day weekends.
“[Calls and activities were] below average for a holiday weekend,” Pugh said. “It was kind of quiet. As compared to previous holiday weekends, it was definitely better than expected. I hope it continues.”
Only one DUI occurred in Dallas County throughout the weekend, Pugh said.
Sgt. Doug Stewart with the Selma Police Department said there were zero reported DUIs in Selma during the Memorial Day holiday period
Statewide statistics for the Memorial Day holiday period are not available at this time as totals from other law enforcement agencies still are being reported.
