We must stop robbing the future we have

We will admit that we have been a little rattled this week. We will admit that we’ve been a little short and testy.

And while we may apologize for such attitude, there is a perfectly good reason; we are frustrated and you should be too.

This week marked another week in the timeline of Selma where a life was allegedly taken for no reason whatsoever. It marked another week when a person’s obituary was published far too soon and it was another week where local police detectives were asking uncomfortable questions and delivering horrific news to a family.

When the news broke about the death of 6-month-old Janiyah Wilson, it was not yet known the mother would be eventually charged for capital murder.

When the headline was written on that first story of her death, it was not yet known she had been killed; her life taken by another.

But as the evidence was gathered, the reports released and the charges announced, what was already a sad and tragic news story, grew even worse. We didn’t think that would have been possible.

In roughly 17 years or so, we should have been preparing to cover Janiyah’s graduation from a local high school; maybe the class of 2029. Instead, we are waiting on the next court date for her mother, the person investigators believe had a hand in the murder.

We should have been publishing pictures of Janiyah’s senior prom a few weeks ago, instead we are waiting on the family and the funeral home to announce the funeral arrangements.

For Selma’s sake — all our sake — we must stop robbing our future and our children’s future.
