Vaughan Regional Medical Center announced Tuesday that Gregory Walker of the surgery department was the recipient of the 2012 Mercy Award.

“Greg is a quiet leader, a faithful employee and a dedicated member of our community,” Vaughan’s Chief Nursing Officer Verno Davidson said. “His job description is that of an operating room transporter, but he is the first to offer to help whenever needed. He does each task with a contagious smile, making him a pleasure to work alongside.”

The Mercy Award remembers Scott Mercy, LifePoint’s founding chairman and CEO, and recognizes one extraordinary employee each year who best embraces the humanitarian spirit on which LifePoint Hospitals was founded.

“Greg’s kind, caring, compassionate spirit is an example to all of us here at Vaughan,” Davidson said.  “His heart is truly one of a servant, doing the right thing when no one is looking and exhibiting a high level of integrity that is sincerely admired by his co-workers. He never ceases to put his patient first.”

Outside of the hospital, Walker is a community volunteer both at a teen help center as well as an assistant football coach at his Alma matter. He mentors teens and young adults, always striving to set an example for them, and gives countless hours each month with fervor.

Walker’s caring, compassionate spirit drives him to care for his invalid mother and grandmother. Though he rarely speaks of his effort, he puts their needs before his own, nurturing and caring for them even while he was unemployed prior to joining Vaughan’s team.

The Mercy Award honor places Walker in the running for national recognition within LifePoint Hospitals’ 2012 company-wide Mercy Award. The company-wide winner will be honored at a ceremony in Nashville, Tenn., later this summer.

Vaughan Regional Medical Center is the sole community provider hospital in Selma.
