As the 2012 Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 1A, 2A and 3A state track and field championships came to a close Saturday at Memorial Stadium, champions were crowned, with some schools maintaining dominance in their classification.

The AHSAA state meets ended Saturday, as champions and runner-ups were named for the boys and girls divisions.

The Cedar Bluff High School boys and girls teams each won their sixth straight track and field championships for Class 1A, while the Westminster School boys and girls teams each finished as runners-up for Class 1A.

Mark Mitchell, head boys track and field coach for Cedar Bluff High School, said the sixth title was just as nice as the first for the boys team.

“It feels great and this one probably feels as special as the first one because it was unexpected. We lost 60, 70 points from last year and we looked at what everybody else had and what everybody had lost, we — at the beginning of the year — were in fourth,” Mitchell said. “Throughout the year, we kept working harder and harder and we talked about not peaking until the right time, and we peaked at the right time. It was a testament to our kids and their attitudes and their hard work and pure determination. They just wanted to win it. I have been blessed as a coach to have coached these kids.”

In Class 2A girls, Barbour County High School took runner-up, as American Christian Academy continued a winning tradition by capturing its sixth straight championship.

Charles Tiller, head track and field coach for American Christian Academy, said it came down to the wire, as his team sealed the title in the day’s final event.

“This was the closest out of all the six state championships — we only won by a point and a half — and we had to win the pole vault, we had to score ten points,” Tiller said. “The young girl, she knew that she had to win and showed no fear. She showed maturity, showed class and did it. My heart was racing. It was great.”

Tanner High School was crowned champion of Class 2A boys, as it edged out runner-up American Christian Academy, which Tiller said won its first state trophy.

In Class 3A girls, Bayside Academy took first place, while T.R. Miller High School was runner-up.

And in 3A boys, Greensboro High School captured its second straight state title, while Hanceville High School was runner-up.

Xavian Evans, head boys track and field coach for Greensboro High School, said his team’s victory was all about preparation.

“We pretty much did our research coming in. We just had to take care of ourselves,” Evans said. “We did a good job in our running events that we qualified in as well as our field events that we qualified in. Pretty much in every event we competed in, we placed if not medaled.”

Highlights of the day included the LaFayette High School boys 4×100 meter relay team setting a state record in the Class 2A race with a time of 43.37 seconds.

As for local teams, the Keith High School boys 4×100 meter relay team finished sixth overall in Class 1A with a time of 47.23.

Keith’s Charles Johnson finished fourth overall in the boys Class 1A 100-meter dash with a time of 11.33.

The R.C. Hatch High School boys 4×100 meter relay team finished fourth overall in the Class 2A race with a time of 46.21.
