StreetFest a rousing success

As ArtsRevive’s Fran Pearce tried to recap the first day of the second annual StreetFest, she immediately began to reflect on what the organization could do better for next year. Forget the fact, there is still one day remaining of beautiful weather, great art, wonderful music and tremendous fellowship in downtown Selma before the 2012 event is truly complete.
“I could not be more pleased with the everything so far,” Pearce said following the completion of Friday’s events. “I know that our vendors and our partners had a better opening day this year, then they did during our first year.”
This marks the second year for the StreetFest, an event that blends art, music and food and is held at ArtsRevive’s location in downtown Selma on Water Avenue.
“The fact this event brings so many people to downtown Selma is fantastic,” Pearce said. “I think this needs to be an example for other groups in bringing more events to downtown Selma.”
A main component of the annual event is the Billy Atchison Memorial Fish Fry, which goes to benefit CrimeStoppers.
“I had heard that they sold more this year then they ever had,” Pearce said. “I was told they sold a little more than 800 dinners.”
The event continues Saturday morning when the vendors and ArtsRevive’s Carneal building opens up for visitors. The event, which is free, will welcome the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra at 11 a.m.
Vendors, featuring a variety of arts and crafts, will line the corner of Water Avenue and Church Street and will also be staged inside the Carneal building.
The event is made possible through grants from the Alabama State Council of the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts, in addition to other sponsors.
