Selma artist Jo Taylor shows off some of her fused glass artwork during an art show at the Selma Art Guild in December. Taylor will be hosting a class on fused glass Saturday at the Art Guild, beginning at 1 p.m.

The magic of manipulating pieces of glass into unique shapes and works of art is usually reserved for professional artisans but this weekend, you’ll have the chance to create your own masterpieces like the pros.

Jo Taylor of the Selma Art Guild, will hold a Fused Glass Jewelry Class Saturday, March 31 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. inside the guild gallery. The cost is $50 and includes all the materials needed for the class.

During the two-hour session, Taylor said individuals will learn how to make one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces.

“I’m going to add sun catchers with it, which are decorative items you put in the window and the sun reflects through it,” Taylor said. “People can come for two hours of fun. I’m going to teach them some design elements and color that will work based on elements of art and principle of designs.”

Taylor said no experience is needed for the class and she encourages individuals to bring their families and friends for a day of creative fun.

“Everything they’ll need is included in the class — everything is precut,” Taylor said. “You’ll assemble the pieces and create what you like.”

Taylor hopes to bring more art education to the public through Saturday’s class.

“The art guild members are working hard to bring the Selma community more art experiences,” Taylor said. “We’re trying to span out more art education.”

Taylor hopes the class can also be a channel for learning.

“I want everyone to have a good time and learn about color and design and be able to learn about fusing,” Taylor said. “Most people will have anywhere between 10 to 15 pieces of jewelry. They’ll be able to make pins, pendants (and) earrings, and if they’d like, sun catchers.”

There is a class limit of 10 students. For more information or to register, call 872-1500 or email Taylor at daisyraku@aol.com.
