David Flenniken Skinner

David Flenniken Skinner of Clearwater, Florida formerly of Selma passed away March 4, 2012 after a short battle with cancer. A celebration of David’s life was held at Unity Church of Clearwater on March 10, 2012.
David is survived by his wife Valerie Furlong, brother Michael Skinner (Carolyn) of Helena, Alabama, sister Elizabeth Heald (Charles)of Selma, nieces Melanie Gaines (Scott), Sherry Barrow (Chris) and Darlene Skinner, nephew Samuel Skinner, Aunt Judy Skinner and two great-nieces and three great-nephews. David was preceded in death by his parents Neal and Betty Skinner.
David was born in Troy, Alabama and grew up in Selma. He was a graduate of Southside High School. During the Vietnam War, David was proud to have served in the U.S. Army’s 5th Mechanized Infantry Division from 1970-1971. Upon his return from the war, David studied drafting at Wallace Community College Selma and began a career in construction. He worked as a construction superintendent and built many buildings and schools in Florida.
David was a great cook, avid fisherman, excellent billiards player and animal rescuer. He loved both freshwater and saltwater fishing and he gave away as many fish as he kept on Redington Long Pier. David rescued many animals including cats, baby rabbits and an injured owl found on the interstate, and took them to the humane society. David loved Alabama Crimson Tide football. His circle of friends was diverse and he loved humor and always had a twinkle in his eyes.
Donations can be made in his name to the Humane Society, American Cancer Society or to a favorite charity.
