If you enjoy history — seeing the rich architectural design of southern antebellum homes or listening to historical events — then you’ll love the 37th annual historic Selma Pilgrimage.

The historic tours of homes and buildings dating back to the early 1800s will take place March 16 and 17 and will offer something new this year: sites in Orrville and Cahawba.

Join the Pilgrimage team for morning and evening tours of homes and museums in Selma, Cahawba, Molette’s Bend and Orrville. Afterward, enjoy an evening reception, art shows by the Selma Art Guild, ArtsRevive and Plein Air artists, and lunch on both days from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. inside the Orrville Community Center on Academy Street. Several menu options will be available, with prices ranging from $5 to $9.

In between the tours, visit the 1860s Kenan’s Mill and the Greek Revival-style mansion famously known as Sturdivant Hall.

Pilgrimage event chair Jacque Johnson said though this year’s tour will not include a cemetery tour or paranormal investigation, visitors can enjoy Pilgrimage’s first-ever artisans fair.

“There will be an evening house tour with two new venues,” Johnson said. “Artisans will demonstrate their skills at Heritage Village during both afternoons, and there will be an antique symposium with several speakers.”

Held Friday and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Heritage Village in Selma, the Artisan’s Fair is free and open to the public. Visitors can enjoy pottery, soap and candle making, basket weaving and quilt making presentations from artists across the Black Belt.

Morning tours include St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at Cahawba, Tasso in Orrville, Dunaway House/Orrville Academy and Craig Wilson House. Afternoon homes include Sarah’s Place, a Cahawba home, Weaver Castle/Weaver Hooper Home, Holly House and Mabry-Jones House.

The public can purchase tickets from Pilgrimage Headquarters at the Vaughan-Smitherman Museum, located at 109 Union St. from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the days of Pilgrimage. Daytime tickets are $50 for all daytime activities, including six homes, $60 for package tickets and $25 for children under 12, accompanied by an adult. Single event tickets and group discounts are also available.
