The University of Alabama’s Sarah Moody Gallery of Art will feature the works of Selma native and artist the late Ann Weaver Norton throughout the month of March.
Norton’s sculptures and paintings will also be shown inside the Sella-Granata Art Gallery on Woods Quad (UA campus) and the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Vicki Rial, Exhibitions coordinator for the Moody Gallery, said Norton’s exhibit is very important, especially to the Ann Norton Gardens, which Norton established in 1977.
“It’s the first time it’s been shown outside of the gardens,” Rial said. “There’s so much work. It’s excellent to see someone who’s worked, as a woman, to have so much massive work of wood and watercolor and drawings.”
Rial said Norton, who died in 1982, was “passionate about her work.”
“She knew where she was headed in the work, she knew her materials very well,” Rial said. “It’s a wonderful show for those reasons and for students as well.”
After leaving Selma, Norton attended Smith College before moving to New York to study at the National Academy of Design, Arts Student League of New York and Cooper Union. Norton also participated in group-shows in New York City’s Museum of Modern Art, or MoMa, and Whitney Museum of American Art. Norton was also the recipient of two Carnegie Travel Fellowships.
With exhibitions in Rome, Venice and Cuba, Norton’s art career spanned more than 50 years.
“It’s not uncommon for women in the art industry to slip away,” Cynthia Palmeiri, executive director of the Gardens, said. “The significance of bringing Anne back home to Alabama, is an opportunity to reestablish Anne in the art world.”
Moody Gallery, located at 103 Garland Hall on Woods Quad, is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
