James Barnard Guthrie, born November 1, 1928 Anniston, AL, Calhoun County moved to Selma when 2 years old. Daddy Earnest Harry Guthrie-retired from Southern Railroad after 44 years. Deceased mother, Audrey Mae Olgesby Guthrie, housewife; deceased brother, Ralph Sidney Guthrie-Retired U.S. Airforce after 30 years; Deceased sisters, Betty Guthrie Shoults; Joyce Guthrie Franks, Patricia Claire Guthrie; survived by sister, Hazel Guthrie Hamilton.

Education: First thru 3rd grade- Baker School, Selma,AL.; Fourth thru 6th grade-Dallas Academy School, Selma, AL.; Seventh Grade-Jr. High School, Selma, AL.; Eighth thru 9th grade-Plantersville, AL.; Tenth thru 12th grade-Albert G. Immediate Family: Wife Wanda Marie Tyndall Guthrie, married June 23, 1956; son, James Kevin Guthrie (Melanie Strang Guthrie) of Smyrna, Tenn.; grandsons, Justin Kyle Guthrie and Jordan Tyler Guthrie; granddaughter, Heather Nicole Guthrie; son, John Todd Guthrie (Karen Looney Guthrie), Montgomery, AL.

Most of my years as a youngster I pursued athletics. Before high school days I was active in all sports at the Selma YMCA. Paul Grist was my first basketball coach. In high school I played varsity baseball, basketball, and football for Coach Comer Sims. Our basketball team won 88 straight games and 2 state tournaments. A record that has yet to be broken. In 3 years of football we only lost 4 football games. I was fortunate to be placed on the ALL State Football team in my senior year, 1947, and made honorable mention in basketball.

After high school I received a football scholarship to attend East Miss. Jr. College. Graduated with a 2 yr., degree in 1951.

January 16, 1951 (during Korea War) joined Army-served (after infantry O.C.S. at Ft. Benning, GA. and airborne school in Korea as a platoon leader in the 25th Infantry Division for 1 year. Returned to states to attend fixed wing school at Ft. Rucker, AL. Soon after fixed wing school I was sent back to Fort Rucker for helicopter school.

After more schools we was stationed to Germany for 3 years with the 4th Armor Division. On our return to the states I attended advanced offices school at Ft. Benning, GA. After graduation I was sent to the 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, KY. left Ft. Campbell June 1964 for a tour of 1 year in Vietnam as an army pilot supporting combat troops. While there I was awarded the Bronze Star and 5 air medals.

Returned to Ft. Bragg in late 1965 assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division. While there we were sent to Command and General Staff College at Ft. Levenworth, Kansas. After graduation back to Fort Bragg until 1968 when we were assigned to JUSMAG in the Philippines. Served there for 18 months then back to Fort Benning for retirement. January 1 1971 as Lt. Colonel.

Relocated back home to Selma,AL. Was Director of Parks & Recreation for the City of Selma for 20 years. Retired November 1, 1990. Now play golf-spend lots of time with wife, sons, and grandchildren. Happy! Having a good life!
