Marina means money

If you have ever spent time at the Selma boat ramp near Bloch Park, you probably understand just how much revenue the city is missing out on by not having a marina building in place.
It’s not unusual to see a full parking lot of trucks and trailers ready to enjoy a day on the water.
Whether it is a trip to Little Miami, or a day of hooking up with bass, crappie and catfish, the Alabama River is a major player in recreation around Selma and the Black Belt.
Unfortunately, for now, a boat ramp and parking lot is all this area has to offer. That could soon change. Plans are again under discussion to construct a building that could offer bait, gas sales and possibly a restaurant.
All of the above could generate a tremendous amount of tax revenue for the city. Boats need gasoline; fishermen need bait; and everyone needs to eat. Sales at each facility would mean more money for Selma that is currently being spent at other locations. A marina makes the area much more attractive to fishing tournaments, boat races and other major events that are currently held in Camden and Demopolis. Both of these areas have great marinas and have reaped the benefits.
The absence of a marina at the city landing has certainly been felt. Hopefully, the plans that are under discussion will match everyone’s vision and provide the services needed to make Selma a stopping point on the river once again.
