Seminar planned for seniors, parents

Though high school graduation for many local seniors is several months away, many students will only have the summertime to make sure final details of the college admission process are wrapped up.

Selma City Ward 8 councilman Corey Bowie will hold a college seminar Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. inside the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center for seniors, sophomores, juniors and their parents to help alleviate the stressors that come with applying for college and getting accepted.

Starting the college process early, Bowie said, is key.

“The key to enrolling in college is early preparation,” Bowie said. “The more prepared they (students) are, the easier the transition to enrolling in college.”

In it’s fourth year, the free annual seminar will give information on such topics as admission requirements, financial aid (work study, loans, grants and scholarships), housing options and course selections, to name a few.

Bowie believes the workshop is imperative for both students and parents.

“Being an educator and working in a community college, I see the need for this workshop,” Bowie said. “It’s very essential that when you’re preparing for college, it’s a long term investment. It’s an investment that will get high results in the end.”

Bowie encourages the public to attend Tuesday’s event.

“I would like to encourage the parents, who are a very pivotal piece in children enrolling in college, to attend,” Bowie said.

“If they (parents) have already filed their tax returns, we can talk about filling out the FAFSA application (for student aid); I can help them with that.”
