“He’s a shining example of what can happen if you do what you need to do — if you obey your parents and your teachers,” said Selma Mayor George Evans about Selma native and Cincinnati defensive end Michael Johnson to Clark Elementary students Friday.

Johnson’s message once again to students was to do their best.

“I was never happy at being mediocre — I’m very competitive,” Johnson said, addressing the room filled with third through fifth graders. “I wanted the best. I want to encourage yall to do your best in whatever it is you’re doing. It’s always important to try yall very best.”

Johnson spoke on the importance of working hard, challenging oneself and doing well in school.

“My parents always taught me to work hard, respect others — the little things went a long way,” Johnson said. “Whatever I do, wherever I’m at, I always felt like I could achieve. My favorite Bible verse is Philippians 4:13, ‘I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.’ I still hold on to that verse to this day.”

One of the keys to success, Johnson said, is remaining optimistic.

“It doesn’t matter who your family is or where you came from, tomorrow’s not promised, so make the most of each day,” Johnson said. “Take advantage of each opportunity. Put a smile on your face, be happy; I want to encourage yall to push yourself and push others — it will go a long way.”

Life, Johnson said, is all about choices.
