In the unstable, shifting landscape that is college football recruiting and national signing day, one phone call can change everything for future student-athletes.

That’s exactly what happened to Morgan Academy senior offensive lineman Hunter Rogers, as a phone call Tuesday night changed Hunter’s future and delivered him a full scholarship to play o-line for the Middle Tennessee State University Blue Raiders in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Hunter’s only scholarship offer had been to Division II West Alabama and he had all but given up hope of playing for the Blue Raiders after they ceased their recruitment of him a while back.

But like the weather of Alabama, the college football recruiting landscape is ever changing, and a recently opened spot enabled Middle Tennessee to offer Hunter, resulting in the late phone call.

“I was kind of worried that they weren’t going to come through, and then they called me last night,” Hunter said. “I could barely breathe. It was nerve wrecking. I had just got home from basketball, and I gave up on them because they told me a week before that they weren’t recruiting me anymore. Then they called and it was shocking. I wasn’t expecting it at all. It was the best thing that ever happened probably in my life.”

The result, Hunter signed a letter of intent to play for the Blue Raiders in front of friends, family, coaches and Morgan Academy faculty and students at the school’s library on Wednesday.

It’s a moment that filled Hunter’s mother Laura and his father Jason with immense pride.

“As a mom, just to see his hard work and his faith, and his dedication pay off — it’s everything,” Laura said. “I’m just very proud.”

Jason said the moment made him just as proud as the day Hunter was born.
