After a hard-fought third quarter, the Morgan Academy Senators could not hold on in the fourth, as they lost 37-27 to the Eastwood Christian School Lady Warriors at home on Saturday.

Rand Smith, head coach of the Senators (5-17, 2-6), said Eastwood came up big when it needed to as the Senators were affected by injuries.

“Eastwood took advantage of every chance they had and we didn’t,” Smith said. “I think we ended up with more ice bags than points. I’m proud of the way we played tough to the end. I’m looking forward to a good practice on Monday and the last game on Tuesday.”

Trailing 21-19 late in the third quarter, Morgan came up big as Lauren Yeldell tied the game at 21-21 on a mid-range jump shot with 2:18 left in the quarter.

Eastwood answered back with a fast-break layup from Mary Grace Owen to take the lead back at 23-21 with 1:29 left in the third.

Morgan tied the game again as Kendall Veach hit a jumper to make it a 23-23 game with 0:33 left in the quarter.

But Eastwood closed the quarter strong when Owen converted a three-point play as she was fouled on a layup, sending her to the line where she made the free throw and put Eastwood back ahead 26-23 going into the final quarter.

Eastwood carried that momentum over to the fourth quarter, scoring the first six points in the game’s final period, and went on to outscore Morgan 11-4 in the quarter.

Casey Baggett led the Senators with 7 points, while Yeldell and Laigan Godwin had 6 points each for Morgan.

Owen led the Lady Warriors with 16 points.

The Senators will take the floor again at home in their final game of the season on Tuesday against Crenshaw Christian Academy with games starting at 5 p.m.
