Marion wrestlers take top honors

Medals, badges and crests aren’t the only hardware on the Marion Military Institute’s campus, as the wrestling team brought home some honors of its own.

The MMI wrestling team captured top honors out of 12 teams at the 2012 Apprentice School’s Builder Invitational in Virginia on Saturday, Jan. 21.

MMI was the only junior college at the tournament, which was the first major tournament of the National Collegiate Wrestling Association season.

MMI finished first with 144 points over Apprentice College, UMBC, Scranton and the University of South Carolina.

Individual wrestlers for MMI also captured first-place trophies in their weight class, with Mike Figueroa winning at 133 lbs, Kyle Kenny winning at 165 lbs, and Matt Baker winning in the heavyweight class.

MMI also had a pair of second-place individual finishers in William Burns at 149 lbs and Richard Brown at 235 lbs.
